Pangaea - Waiting For Touch by silvestris Pangaea - Waiting For Touch by silvestris
Because of DeviantArt's new terms, I'm pulling all my original images, leaving only 'thumbnails' here. You can find the real picture here.

Pangaea: Crow, the scarred courtesan-boy of the Floating City of Machra-la. Young and jaded, sensual yet bitter, inviting yet defiant; he's a complex little figure, and a true child of Machra-la.
Though if course he'd never let mere feelings get in the way of his professionality... save for when a certain someone is involved.

Media used: Corel Photopaint 9, Wacom Graphire3 tablet.
Character and image are silvestris (me) and my NOT be used in any way without my permission.

Oh my... I used to watch your art on Eflwood... I swear it must have been about 5 years ago... I found you by complete accident.. wasn't sure you were the same person until I saw this. Crow is a character that has stuck in my mind... I still remember the haunting image of him drowning. This is stunning work... *watches you* I'm so pleased I found your art again after all this time. <3

It's a scar - it's more visible in the full-sized version.

Oh. That makes more sense. And I have to say, in the full-sized version, her eyes stand out SO much more... and it makes her look more exotic and the color seems more bold...

ahhh. i like crow. i remember the comic page you did of him and his special someone. i liked him then and wanted more. nice to see him here now. i never noticed before, but i take it that that is a scar on his cheek. scarred inside and out. that fits. yet the scar doesn't take away from his looks at all. as always, i like how you do hair. the crow feathers look really good with the bits of purple green and red shining in them. nice job on making the fabric look 3D. the more i look at his eyes the more brilliant and engaging they are. i've always liked his purple lips, though they look a little magentaish here. nice smoky effect on his makeup.

Ah, so lovly to see work from you again Silvy. Crow, like all your characters, is a multitude of grey shades, so many conflicts in their personalities. I think you've really pinned that down here, there's something in his expression, in the shape of his face that makes him look so delicate, yet his eyes are cold, almost untouchable, which, again, is at odds with what he does.

On a technical note, I adore the way you've framed his face with his hair, all that swirling is so sensuous, kind of Van Gogh-esque.

There is something about this that makes it stand out from the other portraits I see on dA, and I'm not sure what it is.
The amount of detail, especially on the feather and the patterns on the clothing is incredible. The pale blue colour on his clothing is beautiful, and the designs are similar enough in colour that they neither stand out too much nor fade too much into the clothing. The sharp, clean lines and the style in which you drew the designs seems a little Japanese, but the style of his clothing is unique enough that it doesn't tie him to any one real-life country. The little reflection from the right on the left side, especially, looks quite good. The way the light reflects is pretty realistic, and makes the fabric seem softer and finer. On the right side, though, the little bit of reflection doesn't look quite as good. It somehow doesn't look quite as smooth, and a little too close to the edge of the fabric, which makes it look a little odd. (On the other hand, I'm not a visual artist, so I'm not entirely sure I know what I'm talking about. :))
The feathers (which I assume are meant to be crow feathers) look quite good, and are pretty detailed. Although they narrow a bit more at the ends than most crow feathers that I've seen do, they still look pretty realistic, and make the picture look more elegant, and give it more personality, than if they weren't there, or even if they were more rounded at the ends.
I won't go into as much detail about the person himself, since, like I said, I'm not a visual artist and I really know nothing about anatomy and so on. He does look quite feminine, but in a different sort of way, I don't really know how to describe it. He doesn't look feminine so much as he looks like a different kind of masculine, if it makes any sort of sense.
The yellow eyes makes him look a little alien, almost, reminding us that he's from a different world, but in a subtle enough way that he still seems human. I get the impression from his face that he's a reserved, withdrawn sort of person, who is generally untrusting of others. The vivid purple of his lips stands out quite a bit against the rest of his face, and they're the first thing that I notice when I look at this. I'm not really sure if I like that or not, or if it would look better if the purple were toned down a little. I realize, though, that the purple lips are part of the character, for better or for worse. :)
The little gold necklaces are quite beautiful. The reflections off of them look pretty good, and they aren't too exaggerated the way reflections off metal often are. They add that bit of wealth that lets us know that in some ways, he is a little more privileged than the average citizen, since, presumably, not everyone in this world can easily access gold. The scar, on the other hand, tells us that despite his position as a courtesan, he hasn't necessarily had an easy life. The scar, by the way, is pretty well-done. It doesn't draw too much attention to itself, the way scars sometimes do in pictures, nor does it seem disfiguring, but it is still there.
It's an outstanding picture, overall, and definitely deserving of a favourite.

Wow, long comment. Thank you very much. :)
It's always very interesting to find out how others would interpret the characters you yourself know so well; it gives you a chance to look upon your creations through someone else's eyes. This is always good, as it adds perspective.
So for this long, detailed and perceptive comment, I thank you muchly. ^_^

No J-rock. Just fantasy character. I drew androgynous asian males before J-rock became fashion. Heck, I did so before I watched my first anime, too. It's a style I like. ,)

There's the hint of an adam's apple, and somewhat rougher lines than you'd see on most females I'd draw. If you removed the make-up it's probably be more visible.
The face is somewhat based on photoreferences; there are men this beautiful out there. And no, none of the references were J-rockers. ,)

Because it's a male. An existing character who is male, albeit it delicate and effeminate. The androgynouslooks is fully deliberate.

It amuses me to no end to see people's confusion at calling Crow a "she". Yes, he's rather feminine looking but I thought that was the point. :) There's a haunt look in his eyes, wary and distant. Poor boy. Must've been broken so much. Lovely work, by the way.

Well, those are his official colors. He probably wore much more appealing shades of make-up when he was still succesful and prestigious; but at this lower level, clashy, gaudy colors it is. ;)

Yup. Men with make-up is nice. They should have just as much right to it as women. ^^

I have used Photoshop on a handful of occasions, but I'm not very fond of it. Photopaint is what I learned CG through, and I've developed an intuitive feeling for it. When I use Photoshop I just get frustrated because it won't behave the way I want it to. ,)
